I've not really been given any time to calm down. People have been hounding me on one philosophical point after another since Tuesday afternoon.
*Sigh*
So, my next attempt at an inane and amusing point is about philosophical summaries on the internet. (e.g. the 'e-philosopher') The idea is really pretty funny when you think about it.
Now, it's been my experience that theoretical wisdom isn't something the majority of people can just pick up on their lunch break. Practical wisdom can be gleaned from presence-of-mind and experience, so maybe over a couple hundred lunch breaks you could say you were more wise in a practical sense. But this is not the case for theoretical wisdom. It requires definitions, a bunch of technical language, lots of little distinctions; quite honestly, it takes a lot of work.
So, what ends up happening is that a lot of people breeze through random stuff pretty perfunctorily. Nowadays they think that they can absorb it from college textbook summaries or with the assistance of the all-knowing internet, which tries to make everything seem easy - kinda like microwave macaroni and cheese. It's a rather amusing thought, you know? Clikity clack clack clack and *bing* - metaphysics from the technological toaster oven. You've just gotta love the conveniences of our so very modern world ;)
And as I sit at the front desk of my library, sneezing from the mold and dust, I reflect that, despite my allergies, I really like books. I like real, original books. Written by real, original authors. With pages that I can, you know, turn, with my finger. . . . I really am a terribly old-fashioned person, aren't I?
Oh well. ;) I'm not that bad. It's not like I live in the stone age. I mean, come on, I have a blog.
*giggle*
Have a happy rest of the week!
Pax Christi,
Em
